This year, we will read literature from many different countries around the world. In doing so, we will gain a better understanding of other people, places, and cultures, and the important role that literature plays in human life. Our journey will include stops primarily in the Middle East, East Asia, India, Africa, and Latin America. Throughout the course, we will engage in learning activities that will give you the opportunity to experience literature in a variety of ways, including self-directed work, small groups, literature circles, reflection, debate, journal writing, and drama, among others. We will also read literature from many genres such as novels, short stories, poetry, drama, and other forms of prose. As we read, we will investigate how literature acts as a mirror that reveals who we are, what we believe, and what we hope to become.

Algebra 1A is a year long course and Algebra 1B is a half year long course which together are the equivalent of a traditional Algebra 1 course. The Algebra 1A program is designed as a formal introduction to the language of mathematics for those students who cannot complete the entire Algebra 1 curriculum in one year. Concepts originally introduced in the K-8 math program are extended and students are introduced to the use of variables. The students learn to solve simple equations and in so doing they experience abstract thinking. This course serves a prerequisite for Algebra 1B.

Welcome to Environmental Science! I hope that this course will be a great learning experience for you, a challenge to your notions of your role in the environment, and a starting point for what you can do to improve your planet. Environmental science is a course that is truly interdisciplinary. We will be learning ideas from the physical sciences (biology, chemistry, ecology, and physics) the social sciences (economics, history, and politics) and philosophy (ethics and morality). This interdisciplinary approach will allow us to understand the causes and connections between many of our pressing environmental and resource problems. One critique of other environmental science courses is that they were either “doom and gloom” courses that stressed all that is wrong with the environment; or they were “tree hugger” courses that were weak on the scientific background of environmental problems. This course will try to present a balanced view, one that presents the problems that we have, but also highlights the successes that have occurred. Most importantly, this course will help you to develop a list of principles, concepts, and rules that will serve you in making and revising decisions throughout your life.
Welcome to Accelerated Biology!
I would like to welcome each of you to an exciting laboratory course here at the “Big C”, Microbiology. In this course we will study organisms that directly affect all life on earth. We will learn how bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses live and interact with humans. The course is designed with a very prominent laboratory component. We will be working with living organisms on a daily basis. We will be learning about where microorganisms live, what they need to stay alive, and how we can control their growth. We will also study their effects on human health and how humans have harnessed them to manufacture many everyday items.
“The goal of the AP Environmental Science course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and man-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.” From the Advanced Placement Course Description - Environmental Science, The College Board, May 1999
Students who can begin early in their lives to think of things as connected, even if they revise their views every year, have begun the life of learning Mark Van Doren
Honors Chemistry is a demanding college preparatory class and consists of most topics that normally would be covered in first-year General Chemistry, including stoichiometry, bonding and atomic theory, kinetics, and equilibrium. The course consists of both a lecture and a laboratory portion, with required written laboratory reports. Motivated students can, with some individual study, take AP Chemistry 2 after the conclusion of this course.
AP Chemistry 1, the first year of a two-year Advanced Placement course in Chemistry, is a very demanding college preparatory class and consists of most topics that normally would be covered in first-year General Chemistry, including stoichiometry, bonding and atomic theory, kinetics, and equilibrium. The course consists of both a lecture and a laboratory portion, with required written laboratory reports. Students are expected to take AP Chemistry 2 after AP Chemistry 1. It is recommended that students wait to take the AP Test after conclusion of AP Chem 2, because not all topics on the test can be covered in a year.
